The Three Things That Control File Size
Getting under a limit stops being guesswork once you know what you are actually adjusting. Only three things determine how many kilobytes a JPEG occupies, and they multiply together rather than adding up.
The first is pixel dimensions. A 4000 × 3000 image contains twelve million pixels; the same photo at 800 × 600 contains 480 thousand — twenty-five times fewer. This is the biggest lever by a wide margin, and it is the one most people never touch.
The second is quality, the 0–100 setting that decides how aggressively detail is discarded. The third is content complexity: a photo of foliage or a crowd has detail in every square inch and compresses badly, while a portrait against a plain studio backdrop compresses easily. Why Resizing Beats Dropping Quality
When people cannot hit a size limit, the instinct is to drag the quality slider down and keep dragging. This is the wrong lever to lean on, because low quality settings produce a specific and very visible kind of damage: blocky 8 × 8 squares in smooth areas like skin and sky, and coloured fringing around text and hard edges.
