Twitter/X Header Profile Overlap

On desktop, your profile picture overlaps the bottom-left corner of your header banner. Avoid placing important content in the bottom-left ~200 × 200 px area of the 1500 × 500 px header to prevent it being covered.

The Timeline Crop Is Not the Full Image

The most common surprise on X is that the image in the timeline is a crop, not the whole picture. A single attached image is displayed in the feed at roughly 16:9, and anything outside that band is hidden until someone taps to open the full image.

This means composition has to survive two different framings. If the important content sits near the top or bottom of a tall image, it will be invisible to everyone who scrolls past without tapping — which is the overwhelming majority.

The reliable approach is to design at 1200 x 675, which is already 16:9, so what you see is exactly what appears in the timeline with no cropping at all. If you need a taller image, keep the essential content within the central 16:9 region and treat the rest as bleed.

How Many Images You Attach Changes the Shape

Multi-image posts are tiled, and each tile has its own aspect ratio.

PNG Keeps Text Sharp

X applies JPEG compression to uploads, and JPEG is at its worst on hard-edged content like screenshots, charts and lettering — it produces visible coloured fringing around every character. Uploading a PNG instead often bypasses the worst of that treatment for graphics with flat colour and text. For ordinary photographs, JPG remains the better choice and PNG just wastes bandwidth.

Frequently Asked Questions

What size should a Twitter/X post image be?

Twitter/X recommends 1200 × 675 pixels (16:9) for in-tweet images. Images outside this ratio are cropped in the feed. Single images can also be 1200 × 628 pixels.

What is the Twitter/X header banner size?

The Twitter/X profile header should be 1500 × 500 pixels. The left side may be obscured by the profile picture on desktop, so keep key content centered or to the right.

What is the Twitter/X profile picture size?

Twitter/X profile pictures should be at least 400 × 400 pixels. They are displayed as a circle. The recommended upload size is 400 × 400 px.

What is a Twitter Card image size?

Twitter Card images (used for link previews) should be 1200 × 628 pixels. This is automatically pulled from your page's og:image meta tag.

What format is best for Twitter/X images?

JPG for photos, PNG for screenshots and graphics with text. Twitter/X converts PNGs to WebP internally, so either format works well.
