Instagram Compression Tip

Instagram recompresses every uploaded image. To minimize quality loss, upload at the exact recommended pixel dimensions and use JPG at 90%+ quality. Avoid uploading images that are already heavily compressed.

Instagram Re-Encodes Everything You Upload

Whatever you send, Instagram resizes it to a maximum of 1080 pixels wide and re-compresses it on its own servers. You have no control over that step, which is why a photo that looked immaculate on your phone can arrive on the feed looking soft or blotchy.

The way to get a good result is to give the encoder as little work to do as possible. Upload at exactly 1080 pixels wide rather than larger: if you send a 4000-pixel image, Instagram downscales it with its own fast algorithm and then compresses the result, so you get two lossy steps instead of one. Resizing to 1080 yourself means Instagram only has to compress.

The same logic applies to file format. Send a high-quality JPG rather than a heavily compressed one, because Instagram compresses whatever it receives — starting from an already-damaged file simply stacks the damage.

Feed Formats: Use the Full Height

Instagram supports three feed shapes, and they do not occupy equal space in the scroll.

Portrait 4:5 — 1080 x 1350
  • The tallest format the feed allows
  • Takes up the most vertical space as people scroll
  • Best for single-subject photos and text-heavy graphics
  • The default choice for most posts
Landscape 1.91:1 — 1080 x 566
  • The smallest footprint in the feed
  • Easy to scroll past without registering
  • Only worth using for genuinely wide compositions
  • Avoid for anything with small text

Story Safe Zones

A Story is 1080 x 1920, but the top and bottom of that frame are covered by interface elements — your profile row and progress bars at the top, the reply box and action buttons at the bottom. Roughly 250 pixels at the top and 250 at the bottom should be treated as decoration only. Keep headlines, captions and anything else that must be read inside the central band, or your text will sit underneath a button.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best size for an Instagram post?

The recommended size for an Instagram feed post is 1080 × 1080 pixels (square). Portrait posts perform best at 1080 × 1350 pixels. Landscape posts are 1080 × 566 pixels.

What size is an Instagram Story?

Instagram Stories should be 1080 × 1920 pixels (9:16 portrait). This is the same size as a full-screen mobile display.

What size is an Instagram Reel?

Instagram Reels use the same 1080 × 1920 pixel (9:16) format as Stories. The thumbnail image should also be 1080 × 1920 pixels.

What is the Instagram profile picture size?

Instagram profile pictures display at 110 × 110 pixels but are stored at 320 × 320 pixels. Upload at least 320 × 320 for sharp display. They are cropped to a circle.

What format should I use for Instagram images?

JPG is recommended for photos. PNG for graphics with text or transparent backgrounds. Instagram compresses all uploads, so start with the highest quality file possible.
