Why Your Photo Looks Rotated in One App and Fine in Another
This is the single most confusing thing about image rotation, and it has a precise cause. When you turn a phone sideways to take a photo, the camera sensor does not physically rotate — the image is captured in the sensor's fixed orientation, and the phone instead writes a small note into the file's EXIF metadata saying 'this should be displayed rotated 90° clockwise'.
Software that reads EXIF honours that note and shows the photo the right way up. Software that ignores it shows the raw sensor data, which appears sideways. Since the pixel data is identical in both cases, the same file can genuinely look correct in your phone gallery, correct in a browser, and sideways in an older desktop application or after uploading to a website that strips metadata.
Rotating the image here resolves the ambiguity permanently. The pixels themselves are physically rearranged into the correct orientation and the EXIF flag is normalised, so every piece of software agrees — nothing is left depending on whether a particular program bothers to read the metadata.
90° Rotations Are Lossless. Arbitrary Angles Are Not.
Turning an image by 90, 180 or 270 degrees is a pure rearrangement — every pixel moves to a new position but keeps its exact value, so nothing is degraded no matter how many times you do it. Rotating by an arbitrary angle such as 5° is different: the pixel grid no longer lines up, so every output pixel has to be interpolated from several input pixels. That softens the image slightly and, because the rotated rectangle no longer fits the frame, either introduces empty corners or requires cropping in. Straightening a crooked horizon is usually worth that cost, but it is worth doing once, from the original, rather than nudging repeatedly.
EXIF Orientation Values
The eight possible values a camera can write. Values 5 to 8 combine rotation with mirroring and are rare outside scanners and front-facing cameras.
