Resizing is not one operation but two, and they behave in opposite ways. Making an image smaller means the software has more source pixels than it needs, so it averages groups of them together to produce each output pixel. The information being discarded is genuinely surplus, which is why a well-downscaled image often looks crisper than the original — the averaging suppresses sensor noise along the way.
Making an image larger is the reverse problem, and it has no clean solution. To turn a 400-pixel-wide image into an 800-pixel-wide one, the software must invent three new pixels for every original pixel. It does this by interpolating between neighbours — essentially educated guesswork — and guessed pixels contain no real detail. The result is a larger file that looks softer than what you started with.
The practical rule that follows: always resize down from the largest version you have, never up from a small one. If you need a 1200-pixel image, go back to the original camera file rather than enlarging the 400-pixel copy you already exported.
Aspect Ratio, and Why Images Get Squashed
Aspect ratio is simply width divided by height. A 4000 × 3000 photo has a 4:3 ratio; 1920 × 1080 is 16:9; a square is 1:1. When you change width and height independently, you change that ratio, and the image stretches or squashes to fit — faces widen, circles turn into ovals.
Keeping the aspect ratio locked avoids this: set one dimension and the other is calculated for you. That is the right default almost always. The exception is when a platform demands an exact size that does not match your image's ratio — a 16:9 YouTube thumbnail from a 4:3 photo, for instance.
In that situation, do not stretch. Crop instead. Cropping removes area from the edges while leaving everything that remains correctly proportioned, so the subject still looks like itself. Stretching distorts every pixel in the frame and is immediately obvious to anyone looking at it.

DPI Does Not Affect Your File — Until You Print It
DPI (dots per inch) is a number stored in the file's metadata that says nothing about how many pixels the image contains. Changing it from 72 to 300 does not add detail, change the file size, or make anything look different on a screen — screens display pixels and ignore DPI entirely. It only matters at print time, where it determines physical size: a 3000-pixel-wide image at 300 DPI prints 10 inches wide, and the same file at 150 DPI prints 20 inches wide but half as sharply. If a printer asks for 300 DPI, what they actually need is enough pixels: multiply the intended print size in inches by 300.
