How to Resize an Image to a Specific File Size
Job applications, government forms, and upload portals all have file size limits. We have dedicated tools for the most common targets — each pre-set to the right quality so you don't have to guess.
Jump to Your Target Size
Each tool opens with the quality slider pre-set to the right starting point for that target — no manual guessing needed.
Why File Size Limits Exist
Upload portals — job boards, government application forms, university admissions — set file size limits to reduce server load and ensure consistent document handling. The most common limits are:
- 50KB — Signature images, strict banking and government portal uploads
- 100KB — Passport photos, ID photos, job application photos
- 200KB — Profile photos, email attachments, general form uploads
- 500KB–1MB — General photo uploads, CVs with photos
How It Works: Resize Then Compress
File size is controlled by two things: pixel dimensions and compression quality. Our dedicated tools handle the compression step — but if your image is very large (e.g. a smartphone photo at 4000px+), reduce the dimensions first for best results.
Step 1 — Resize pixel dimensions (if needed)
If your photo is from a smartphone, go to the Resize tool and reduce width to the range for your target (see table below). This alone can cut file size by 80–90%.
Step 2 — Use the dedicated size tool
Upload to the relevant tool below. The quality slider is already at the right starting point. Compress, check the result size shown, and download.
Starting Dimensions & Quality by Target
Use these as starting points — actual output size varies with image content (photos with lots of detail compress less):
| Target | Resize to | Quality | Tool |
|---|---|---|---|
| 50KB | 400–600px wide | 58% | → 50KB tool |
| 100KB | 600–800px wide | 65% | → 100KB tool |
| 200KB | 800–1000px wide | 72% | → 200KB tool |
| 500KB | 1200–1600px wide | 75–80% | → Compressor |
| 1MB | 1600–2400px wide | 80–85% | → Compressor |
The dedicated tools (50KB, 100KB, 200KB) open with quality pre-set — you may not need to adjust at all.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I reduce an image to exactly 100KB?
Use the Resize to 100KB tool — it opens with quality pre-set to 65%, the right starting point for most photos. If the result is still over 100KB, resize to 600–800px wide first using the Resize tool, then compress again.
How do I compress an image to under 200KB?
Use the Compress to 200KB tool — quality starts at 72%. For photos wider than 1000px, resize first. A 1000px wide photo at 72% quality typically lands between 100–200KB.
Why do government forms require images under 100KB?
Government portal upload systems set strict file size limits to reduce server load and storage costs. 100KB is the most common limit for passport photos, ID photos, and signature images.
What is the best format for small file sizes?
JPG is best for photos. It achieves the smallest file size for photographic content. WebP is even smaller but many government forms only accept JPG.
What if my image is still over the limit after compressing?
Reduce pixel dimensions first. Go to the Resize tool and set width to the range for your target. Reducing a 4000px smartphone photo to 700px wide cuts file size by 80–90% before compression even starts.
