Facebook Cover Photo Safe Area
On mobile, Facebook crops the cover photo to show only the center portion. Keep your logo or important text within the central 640 × 312 px area to ensure it is visible on all devices.
The Cover Photo Is Cropped Differently on Every Device
A Facebook cover photo is uploaded at 820 x 312 pixels, but almost nobody sees exactly that. Desktop shows the full width. Mobile shows a narrower, taller slice taken from the centre, cutting off a substantial portion of each side.
This is why so many cover photos have logos or text hanging half off the edge when viewed on a phone. The design was built for the desktop frame and never checked against the mobile crop.
The workable rule is to treat the central 640 x 312 region as the only reliably visible area. Put anything that must be seen — a logo, a tagline, a face — inside that band, and let the outer portions carry only background that can be lost without anyone noticing.
Facebook Compresses Hard
Uploads are re-encoded on Facebook servers, and the compression is more aggressive than most platforms. Two things reduce the damage. First, upload at exactly the recommended dimensions so Facebook does not have to downscale before compressing — that avoids stacking two lossy operations. Second, start from a high-quality source; compressing an already-compressed image is what produces the muddy, blotchy look common on the platform.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Facebook cover photo size?
Facebook cover photos should be 820 × 312 pixels on desktop and 640 × 360 pixels on mobile. Use 820 × 312 pixels for the best results across both devices.
What size should a Facebook post image be?
The recommended Facebook post image size is 1200 × 630 pixels. Facebook scales images to fit, but uploading at this size ensures the best quality.
What is the Facebook profile picture size?
Facebook profile pictures display at 170 × 170 pixels on desktop. Upload at least 180 × 180 pixels. They are displayed as a circle.
What size is a Facebook event cover?
Facebook event covers should be 1920 × 1005 pixels. The safe area (always visible) is roughly the center 1920 × 600 px region.
What format is best for Facebook images?
JPG is recommended for photos. PNG for graphics with text or logos. Facebook compresses all uploads — always start with a high-quality original.
