WhatsApp Compresses Everything You Send
Photos sent through a normal WhatsApp chat are re-encoded before delivery, and the compression is heavy — images are typically capped around 1600 pixels on the long edge and re-compressed at a fairly low quality setting. This is deliberate: WhatsApp is used extensively on slow and metered connections, and small files are the priority.
This is why a sharp photo can arrive looking soft, and why a screenshot full of text can arrive with visible fringing around every letter. Nothing about the recipient device causes it; the file that arrives is genuinely a smaller, lower-quality version than the one you sent.

Send as Document to Bypass Compression Entirely
If quality genuinely matters — a document scan, a screenshot someone needs to read, a photo being sent for printing — attach it as a document rather than as a photo. Use the attachment menu and choose Document instead of Gallery, and WhatsApp transfers the file untouched at full resolution. The recipient gets the original bytes rather than a re-encoded copy. The trade-off is that it appears as a file to download rather than an inline image preview, and it counts against the file size limit rather than the image pipeline.
Profile Photos and Stickers Have Their Own Rules
A profile photo is displayed as a circle, so anything in the corners of a square image is cut away. Crop square and keep the face centred and reasonably tight — a full-body shot becomes unrecognisable at the size a profile picture is actually displayed.
Stickers are the strictest case on the platform. They must be WebP, exactly 512 x 512 pixels, and under 100KB, with a transparent background.
