Why Your iPhone Photos Will Not Open on Windows
Since iOS 11, iPhones have saved photos as HEIC by default. HEIC is a container built on HEVC, the same video compression standard as H.265, and it reaches roughly half the file size of JPEG at comparable quality. That is a genuine engineering win — it is why your phone can hold thousands more photos than it otherwise would.
The problem is licensing rather than technology. HEVC is covered by a substantial patent pool, so support has to be paid for. Apple ships it across its own devices, but Windows requires a separately installed codec, and a long tail of desktop software, upload portals and photo printers simply never added it.
So the format works flawlessly inside the Apple ecosystem and creates friction everywhere else. Converting to JPEG trades away the size advantage for compatibility that is effectively universal — JPEG has been readable by every piece of imaging software for three decades.

What Gets Left Behind in the Conversion
A HEIC file can hold considerably more than one picture. Live Photos store a short video alongside the still; Portrait mode shots carry a depth map that allows the background blur to be re-edited later; burst sequences keep every frame in a single container. JPEG holds exactly one flat image, so all of that is discarded on conversion. Ordinary EXIF data such as the date, camera settings and location does carry across. If a photo has depth or motion data you might want later, keep the HEIC original and treat the JPEG as an export.

Stopping Your iPhone Producing HEIC
If you would rather your phone simply captured JPEG from the outset, open Settings, then Camera, then Formats, and choose Most Compatible instead of High Efficiency. New photos will be saved as JPEG from that point on. Existing HEIC files are unaffected and still need converting.
There is also a middle path worth knowing about. Under Settings, Photos, at the bottom of the screen, the Transfer to Mac or PC option can be set to Automatic, which converts HEIC to JPEG on the fly when you transfer photos over a cable — keeping the space savings on the device while handing over compatible files.
