Pinterest Pin Height Tip
Taller pins (2:3 ratio) take up more vertical space in Pinterest feeds and typically get more impressions. However, pins taller than 1:2.1 ratio (e.g. 1000×2100 px) may be truncated. The sweet spot is 1000×1500 px for maximum visibility without truncation.
Pinterest Is a Vertical Platform, and the Ratio Is the Whole Game
Pinterest arranges pins in a masonry grid where every column is a fixed width and pins extend downward as far as their aspect ratio dictates. A tall pin therefore occupies more of the screen than a short one at no extra cost, which is why vertical images dramatically outperform square and landscape ones here.
The ratio Pinterest recommends is 2:3 — typically 1000 x 1500 pixels. That is tall enough to command attention in the feed without being so long that it gets truncated.
Truncation is the trap at the other end. Pins substantially taller than 2:3 are cut off in the feed, and the cut usually lands somewhere unhelpful. If you are making a long infographic, accept that only the top portion will be visible in the grid and make sure that portion carries the hook on its own.
Pin Formats
| Format | Size | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Standard pin | 1000 x 1500 | 2:3 — the recommended default |
| Square pin | 1000 x 1000 | Works, but takes less feed space |
| Long infographic | 1000 x 2100 | Truncated in feed; hook must be at the top |
| Story or idea pin | 1080 x 1920 | 9:16 full screen |
| Profile picture | 165 x 165 | Displayed as a circle |
Text Overlay Has to Work at Thumbnail Size
Pins are browsed at a few hundred pixels wide on a phone, not at the size you design them. Text that looks comfortable in your editor at full resolution frequently becomes unreadable in the actual feed. The practical test is to shrink your finished pin to about 300 pixels wide and look at it — if the headline is not effortlessly readable at that size, it is too small, and the pin will be scrolled past.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best Pinterest pin size?
The recommended Pinterest pin size is 1000 × 1500 pixels (2:3 ratio). Taller pins up to 1000 × 2100 px also perform well. Avoid pins taller than 1:2.1 as Pinterest may truncate them in the feed.
What is the Pinterest square pin size?
Square Pinterest pins are 1000 × 1000 pixels (1:1 ratio). They take up less feed space than portrait pins but work well for certain content types.
What size is a Pinterest board cover?
Pinterest board covers should be 800 × 800 pixels (1:1 square). This is the thumbnail shown on your profile for each board.
What is the Pinterest profile picture size?
Pinterest profile pictures should be at least 165 × 165 pixels. They are displayed as a circle.
What format is best for Pinterest images?
JPG for photos, PNG for graphics and infographics with text. Pinterest recommends JPG or PNG under 20MB. Infographic-style pins with text overlays tend to get more saves.
