What This Conversion Can and Cannot Do
It is worth being straight about this one, because a lot of pages are not. Converting JPG to PNG does not improve your image. JPEG compression is lossy and permanent — when the file was first saved, detail was mathematically discarded and the artifacts that replaced it became part of the picture. PNG stores whatever it is given with perfect fidelity, which means it stores those artifacts perfectly too.
What you get is a bigger file containing exactly the same visual information. For a typical photograph, expect the PNG to be five to ten times the size of the JPG with no visible improvement whatsoever.
That does not make the conversion useless — it makes it purposeful. There are several situations where PNG is genuinely the correct destination, and they all have to do with what happens to the file next rather than how it looks right now.
Good and Bad Reasons to Convert
The valid reasons are all about the workflow ahead of the file, not the quality behind it.

PNG Does Not Create Transparency by Itself
PNG supports transparency; it does not add it. Converting a JPG gives you a PNG whose alpha channel is fully opaque — the white background behind your logo stays exactly as white as it was. Removing it is a separate editing step that requires actually erasing those pixels. If you need a genuinely transparent logo, the reliable path is to go back to the original vector or layered source file rather than trying to rescue a flattened JPG.
