YouTube Thumbnail Size: Resolution, Ratio and Upload Limits

A thumbnail needs to work twice: as an image you can upload and as a tiny preview someone can understand. Start with the right canvas, then check the design at the size viewers will actually see.

Current YouTube thumbnail dimensions

UseRecommended canvasShape
Video thumbnail3840 × 2160 pixels16:9
Shorts thumbnail2160 × 3840 pixels9:16
Podcast playlistSquare canvas1:1

YouTube recommends these larger video and Shorts canvases, with a minimum video width of 640 pixels and minimum Shorts height of 640 pixels. A recommendation is not a promise that enlarging a small original will make it sharper.

The upload limit depends on the device

YouTube lists a 2MB mobile limit for video thumbnails and 10MB for podcast thumbnails. Desktop uploads allow up to 50MB for video, Shorts and podcast thumbnails. Use JPG or PNG. Custom Shorts thumbnails are added through YouTube Studio on a computer.

Check the finished file

A file that fits a desktop upload may exceed the mobile limit. Check the downloaded file size before switching devices.

Resize your thumbnail in three steps

  1. Open the YouTube image resizer and select your original image.
  2. Choose the Thumbnail preset. It fills a 16:9 frame and crops overflow from the center. Crop your original first if the subject is off-center.
  3. Download the result, check the file size, and preview it in YouTube Studio. If necessary, compress a copy for a mobile upload.

Make a large image readable when it is small

Use one main subject and leave space around it. A headline that fills the entire canvas at editing size often turns into a stripe at feed size. Zoom your design out until it is only a few hundred pixels wide and check whether the subject and words still make sense.

Keep a clean original with editable text. Export the final copy once. Repeatedly downloading and editing a compressed thumbnail makes it harder to keep edges clean.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is 1280 × 720 still a useful thumbnail size?

It has the same 16:9 shape and exceeds the published minimum width. The current recommendation is larger; use a sufficiently detailed source rather than stretching a small image just to reach that number.

Does this tool add text or design my thumbnail?

The resizer changes dimensions and output settings. Create the design first, then resize and check its readability.
