Shopify Image Sizes: Products, Banners and File Weight
Shopify does not have one image size that suits every theme and section. Match the source to the shape and display size of the place where it will appear.
Product images and theme images serve different layouts
Shopify allows product and collection images up to 5000 × 5000 pixels, or 25 megapixels. It creates different image sizes for different theme areas. The upload ceiling is not a recommendation to make every product photograph that large.
| Use | Starting point to evaluate |
|---|---|
| Square product photograph | 2048 × 2048 pixels |
| Product gallery | Consistent ratios and similar subject scale |
| Wide banner | Match the section ratio and inspect mobile cropping |
| Logo | Use a clean source with suitable transparency |
Why the same banner looks different on mobile
A wide desktop section and a tall phone viewport expose different parts of an image. If the theme fills the section by cropping, text near the edge can disappear. Use the theme’s focal-point or separate mobile-image controls when available. Keep important words as real theme text rather than baking all of them into the image.
The 1920 × 1080 slideshow preset is a starting canvas, not a requirement for every Shopify theme. Check the section settings before exporting a whole campaign.
Prepare a product gallery
- Crop each image to a consistent shape and align the product visually.
- Resize an upload copy to the dimensions needed by the largest relevant display.
- Compare quality and file size after compression. Inspect fabric, small text and fine product edges.
- Upload to Shopify and check product, collection and mobile views.
Avoid doing the same work twice
Keep one high-quality master and export upload copies from it. Do not download a thumbnail from the storefront and enlarge that thumbnail for the next campaign. It may already be a reduced derivative.
For a batch, start with similar crops. Resizing every file to the same rectangle can distort subjects when the originals have different shapes. A shared width with proportional height is often safer for a mixed set.
What to check when the store still feels slow
Look at the actual image shown in the page, not only the source upload. Theme layout, responsive image selection and loading behavior also matter. Repeatedly compressing an already tiny image may harm detail without addressing the slow part of the page.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does every product image need to be 2048 × 2048?
No. That is a useful square starting point. The right choice depends on your source, theme and desired detail.
Will resizing fix a bad mobile crop?
Not by itself. The composition, section ratio and theme crop behavior must also agree.
