Etsy Listing Photo Size: Cropping and Sharp Product Photos

An Etsy photo has to show the whole product in a small listing thumbnail and enough detail when a buyer opens it. Good framing matters as much as the dimensions.

Start with a sufficiently large original

Etsy recommends listing photos with both width and height at least 2000 pixels. Keep a high-quality original so you can make different crops without repeatedly enlarging smaller copies.

Leave room around the product

Place the product away from the edges and check the first listing thumbnail separately from the full photo. A tall vase and a wide necklace need different compositions even when their files have the same dimensions. Keep all essential parts visible when the preview is cropped.

Use a consistent background and similar subject scale across a group of listings. Equal canvas dimensions alone will not align products photographed from different distances.

Prepare a listing photo

  1. Choose a sharp original and crop out unrelated background.
  2. Open the Etsy image resizer and choose a suitable preset or custom dimensions.
  3. Check that resizing did not remove product edges or make the subject unnaturally wide.
  4. Download the output, add it to the listing, and adjust the thumbnail preview in Etsy.

Photos, graphics and file weight

JPG is a practical choice for photographic product images. Check delicate patterns and text at normal viewing size after compression. If you use a PNG with transparency, preview how its background appears in the listing instead of assuming that every surface will display it the same way.

Do not make a blurry photo much larger simply to satisfy a suggested number. Reshoot or use a better original when the source does not show the product clearly.

A repeatable product-photo checklist

  1. Compare the first image across several listings at thumbnail size.
  2. Open the detail view and inspect important textures or small lettering.
  3. Confirm the final orientation and colors after upload.
  4. Keep original and upload copies in separate folders.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a square mandatory for every listing photo?

Use the composition that suits the product and inspect Etsy’s thumbnail crop. A square preset is a convenient option, not a universal composition rule.

Can the resizer fix an out-of-focus product photo?

No. Resizing changes dimensions; it cannot recover the detail that was never captured.
