App Store Screenshot Tip

Apple requires at least one screenshot for the largest iPhone screen size (6.7 inch). If you only upload one set of screenshots, upload for the 6.7 inch iPhone — Apple will scale them for smaller devices. For iPad, you must upload separate iPad screenshots if your app is universal.

These Dimensions Are Requirements, Not Suggestions

Unlike most image sizing, app store screenshots are validated on upload. Submit a file at the wrong pixel dimensions and it is rejected outright — there is no scaling to fit and no approximate match. The sizes have to be exact.

Apple derives its required sizes from specific device displays, which is why the numbers look arbitrary. The store asks for screenshots at the resolution of the largest iPhone and iPad displays, and uses those to represent the app across smaller devices.

Google Play is considerably more relaxed: it accepts a range of sizes within defined minimum and maximum bounds and a permitted aspect ratio, rather than demanding exact figures. If you are shipping to both, produce the Apple sizes first — they are the binding constraint, and Play will accept material derived from them.

The First Two Screenshots Do Almost All the Work

Store listings show only the first two or three screenshots without scrolling, and most people never scroll. Those first frames should communicate what the app does immediately rather than showing an empty state or a login screen. Adding a short caption across the top of each screenshot is standard practice for this reason — it lets someone understand the value in a couple of seconds, which is realistically all the attention the listing will get.
